On September 5, 1906, the Brazilian Sport Shooting Confederation was born, originally known as the Brazilian Shooting Confederation (CBT). That moment marked the beginning of a history full of achievements and progress for national sport shooting.
Historic Milestones and Olympic Achievements
Brazilian sport shooting gained international recognition with two memorable events. On August 2, 1920, during the Antwerp Olympic Games, Afrânio da Costa made history by winning Brazil’s first Olympic medal, a silver in Free Pistol.
The next day, August 3, it was Guilherme Paraense’s turn to shine, securing the country’s first Olympic gold medal in Rapid Fire Pistol. This feat led to the annual celebration of Sport Shooter’s Day, commemorated throughout Brazil.
118 Years of Tradition
At 118 years old, CBTE, the oldest confederation in Brazil, plays an important role in promoting and developing sport shooting, both Olympic and Paralympic, throughout the national territory.
Evolution of the Confederation’s Names
- CTB – Brazilian Shooting Confederation (1906-1923): Founded by Legislative Decree No. 1,503 on September 5, 1906, headquartered in Rio Grande do Sul, and initially chaired by Congressman Elysio de Araújo.
- FBT – Brazilian Shooting Federation (1923-1935): Created on July 2, 1923, on the initiative of Dr. Afrânio Antônio da Costa, and chaired by Miguel Calmon Du Pin. The FBT joined the UIT – International Shooting Union in 1924.
- FBT (Re-establishment) (1935-1941): On July 10, 1935, Dr. Afrânio Costa re-established the Brazilian Shooting Federation, authorized by Notice No. 149 of the Ministry of War, published in the Official Gazette (DOU) No. 256 of November 5, 1935.
- CBCT – Brazilian Hunting and Shooting Confederation (1942-1947): Created on July 8, 1942, based on Law No. 3,199 of April 14, 1941, and chaired by Lieutenant Colonel Américo Braga.
- CBTA – Brazilian Target Shooting Confederation (1947-1994): Founded on November 28, 1947, with the support of the Brazilian Olympic Committee, in the auditorium of the Brazilian Press Association, RJ. The first President was Minister Dr. Afrânio Antônio da Costa, and the entity brought together Federations from several states.
- CBT – Brazilian Shooting Confederation (1994-2001): Adopted the new name on February 14, 1994.
- CBTE – Brazilian Sport Shooting Confederation (1999-present): As of December 1, 1999, CBTE became the official acronym, reflecting the evolution and focus on the sporting discipline.
