Sport shooting is a sporting discipline in which the shooter must hit the target as many times as possible. However, these targets can be fixed or moving, and vary in size, distance and shape. These differences determine the discipline being competed in.
This is a sport — like others — that requires concentration, discipline and reasoning, as well as a lot of training. In Brazil, the sport is practiced at shooting clubs, found in every state of the country. In addition, sport shooting is subdivided into 11 disciplines across 3 categories: Handguns, Long Guns and Clay Target Shooting.
Firearms did not come about for the purpose of sport. However, over time and with the contribution of hunting clubs and military practice, sport shooting grew and gained strength around the world. Hunters’ activities even inspired some of the events that exist today, such as skeet and trap.

Sport shooting has been present at the Olympic Games since the first edition, in 1896 in Athens. A curious fact is that until 1964 only men took part in the competition. The first women to compete were only able to do so in 1968, when the Olympic Games were held in Mexico City. Today, sport shooting is contested in 15 categories, nine men’s and six women’s.

Sport shooting in Brazil

Brazil made its Olympic debut a little later, only in 1920, but already with a gold medal. In total, Brazil has won three: one gold, one silver and one bronze, all in sport shooting. Check out the timeline of sport shooting in Brazil:

1906: The Brazilian Shooting Confederation is founded – the first entity to govern Brazilian shooting.
1910: The first Brazilian target shooting championship is held.
1914: The Revólver Clube is founded in Rio de Janeiro.
1917: Shooting societies are incorporated by the Brazilian Army, adopting the name Tiros de Guerra, according to legislation.
1919: The Fluminense Futebol Clube shooting range opens.
1920: Brazil’s first Olympic gold medal.
1923: Creation of the Brazilian Shooting Federation.
1927-1934: Brazilian shooting championships are organized. During this period the sport was still amateur.
1992: The Brazilian Practical Shooting Confederation is created, formerly an Association, and begins organizing the Brazilian Championships. The first was held in Brasília, following international rules.
1996: Brazil hosts the World Practical Shooting Championship in Brasília.
